Application
Low carbon steel offers remarkable adaptability, lending itself to various processing techniques like forging, welding, and cutting. Its malleability allows for the production of chains, rivets, bolts, shafts, and more. Characterized by a carbon content of less than 0.25%, this soft steel is also referred to as mild steel. It encompasses both ordinary carbon structural steel and high-quality carbon structural steel. Typically, low carbon steel is rolled into angle steel, channel steel, I-beams, steel pipes, belts, and plates, used to fabricate structural components, containers, boxes, furnace bodies, and agricultural machinery. Its high-quality variants are rolled into sheets for deep drawing products like car cabs and engine hoods. These bars are also crafted into mechanical parts with low strength requirements. Despite its versatility, the usage of mild steel is restricted by its inherent low strength.
Enhancing the strength of steel is achievable by increasing manganese content and incorporating trace alloying elements like vanadium, titanium, and niobium into carbon steel. In the manufacturing process, a mild steel bar is inserted until the desired round steel pipe is formed, followed by high-frequency current welding. Once shaped, the tube is adjusted for deviation and cut to the specified length. Subsequent deburring and pressure testing ensure quality, after which the tube undergoes hot dip galvanizing or surface painting. For added functionality, the ends may be beveled and threaded with flanges. In the automotive industry, mild steel pipes are a popular choice for producing lightweight vehicles, but they also serve effectively in general framing or housing applications.
